Angus Lyons marked a successful return to competition, taking victory in the opening round of the Queensland Classic Road Series held in Kalbar yesterday. It was Lyons’ first “real world” race since March, having only competed in the NRS on Zwift series during the past months of the COVID-19 pandemic affected 2020 season.
The 24 year old, who made the move from Ballarat to warmer climates pre-lock down got the better of a 3 up sprint against Ryan Cavanagh (St George Continental) & Kane Richards (Avantias Pro Racing). The trio finished 40 seconds ahead of the chasing peloton.
Lyons established an early lead 20kms into the 126km event, joined by 3 riders off the front and gaining an advantage of over 2 minutes before the reaction came from the peloton. With 40kms to go: Cavanagh & Richards rode across a 1 minute 20 second gap to the leaders and worked hard to ensure the breakaway would survive. With the duo being considerably fresher than the others, only Lyons managed to hold on in the closing stages: Shutting down a number of late attacks from Cavanagh and then winning the final sprint in dominant fashion.
