Another outstanding haul of consistent results at the Tour of Gippsland has elevated Nicholas White into 2nd place in the overall National Road Series individual rankings. The Oliver’s Racing youngster is now just 5 points off the series leader, German Raphael Freinstein of Inform-Make.
The 21 year old from Ballarat has been one of the revelations of the 2018 domestic season. After a string of no less than eight podium finishes since the NRS recommenced in July, it was stage 3 in Sale where he finally delivered his maiden victory, taking the win in a sprint finish after being looked after all race by his teammates. There was an outpouring of emotion from White as he crossed the line.
The victory elevated him to 2nd overall in the race just 6 seconds behind Freinstien, who went on to win the Tour overall, with the pair setting near identical times on the final day Individual Time Trial up Mt Baw Baw. Their times differed by just 0.4 of a second for the 4.7km climb.
With just two rounds of the NRS to go, it looks like it will be a tight battle between the duo, and Bennelong Swiss-Wellness’ Ayden Toovey, who is 100 points behind the pair in third. The penultimate round of the series will be the Tour of Tasmania in 4 weeks time, before the final round: The Giro Della Donna on the 24th & 25th of November.
